HERBIG- HARO
Principia Institute of Theoretical Physics
Nov 24/ Apr 25- São Paulo Brazil
Founded in 2017, the Principia Institute is part of the Foundation Institute of Theoretical Physics, created in 1951, an organization that develops and disseminates Brazilian basic science through teaching, research, and outreach.
With initiatives such as the Escola de Talentos (School of Talents), which focuses on the personal and academic development of young students interested in science, and the programming that takes place at the Digital Planetarium, a space with a dome that allows for immersive experiences in projecting videos and graphic animations on science, culture, and art, the Institute fosters dialogue between the scientific community, the private sector, the media, and the general public.
In an effort to establish dialogues between art and science, the Principia Institute is hosting the work of artist Marcia Ribeiro. With a solid artistic production spanning over twenty years, the artist is exhibiting recent paintings in the Herbig-Haro exhibition at the Institute's gallery. The paintings in the exhibition present forms that appear to be in constant motion, triggered by luminescent phenomena, arranged in compositions that are sometimes objects and sometimes dreamlike environments. With a visual repertoire that straddles artistic and scientific images, Marcia Ribeiro’s pictorial research reminds us that both art and science produce images that are often similar, contributing to the visual repertoire and collective imagination of Western culture.
On the opening day of Herbig-Haro, Marcia Ribeiro will present Supernova Réquiem at the Digital Planetarium. This is a video mapping projection created from details of the artist’s paintings. The details are recombined, animated, and moved in a cinematic unfolding of the paintings, projecting a pictorial dome that creates an immersive environment. The projection is accompanied by a soundtrack by Arthur Braganti, who will perform live during each session.
As a reference to the educational and research-oriented mission of the Principia Institute, Marcia Ribeiro is moving her studio to a room in the building, keeping it open for visitors throughout the Herbig-Haro exhibition. In the studio, earlier works by the artist will be displayed, revealing her plastic repertoire with images that evoke atomic and cosmic phenomena. Just like scientific laboratories, the studio is a place for process, experimentation with instruments and techniques, and opening it to the public shows the formation of the artwork as a constant research process.
Herbig-Haro will also feature the educational program Além do Espaço (Beyond Space), led by physicist João Fonseca, aimed at public school students ages 12 to 17. The program will include scientific experiments conducted by the Demonstration Laboratory of the Institute of Physics at the University of São Paulo (USP), sky observations with telescopes, and guided tours of the exhibition and Marcia Ribeiro’s studio, encouraging students to explore the possible dialogues between art and science.
